Learning Disabilities (ADHD, ADD)

"Chiropractors correct abnormalities of the intellect as well as those of the body."

-Quote from D.D. Palmer, Founder of Chiropractic

Today, one out of every six children in America has a chronic illness such as:

  • Dyslexia
  • ADD [Attention Deficit Disorder]
  • ADHD [ADD with Hyperactivity]
  • Minor brain damage, convulsions
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Depression, manic-depressive disorder
  • Autism, Asperger syndrome
  • Asthma2

For children with ADHD, the symptoms often last until adult age. Between 6.5 and 9 million adults in the U.S.A. have this disorder.1.

Medical treatment

According to Peter Breggin, MD, the drugs used with these developmental disorders are questionable.3. Ritalin can lead, among other things, to behavioral disorders, psychoses, manias, impaired growth and addiction. Side effects such as loss of appetite, dizziness, insomnia, weight loss, headaches and moodiness or listlessness can appear. The drugs that are administered to hyperactive children to relieve this attention deficit can frequently elicit the same problems that they are supposed to treat: inattention, jumpiness and impulsiveness.

The chiropractic approach

For decades, American case studies4, 5, 6, 7 have reported the effectiveness of chiropractic care for children with many kinds of illnesses.

Does chiropractic care improve brain function?

The American studies also found evidence to support:

  • an increase of blood supply to the brain8
  • decreased anxiety
  • an increase of well being and brain function

Chiropractic adjustment seems to bring nerve reflexes and complex neurological mechanisms in the spinal cord into balance.
